The Role of Digital Health and Therapies in Italy’s Future.

GDMH joins the Stati Generali della Sanità Digitale e DTx to discuss Digital Health, Therapies (DTx), and Italy’s legislative advancements.

Event: Stati Generali della Sanità Digitale e DTx

On 20 September, GDMH participated in the “Stati Generali della Sanità Digitale e DTx,” a two-day event organized by Politecnico di Milano and the Italian Health Policy Brief Journal. This key meeting brought together experts and stakeholders from technical, social, and policy fields to explore the critical role of Digital Health and Digital Therapies (DTx) in Italy, along with the related legislative processes.

Thematic Panels and Focus Areas

1. Data in Healthcare and the Role of Artificial Intelligence

Discussions emphasized the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare, particularly in improving the use of data for decision-making and patient care.

2. Digital Therapies in Italy

In this panel, with active participation from GDMH’s CEO Alfredo Cesario, experts examined the current state and potential growth of Digital Therapies, addressing challenges and opportunities within the Italian healthcare system.

3. Professionals’ Competencies and Training

Stakeholders highlighted the importance of equipping healthcare professionals with the skills and training necessary to develop and implement Digital Health technologies.

Outcomes from the Event

The discussions, involving over 100 experts from the Technical Scientific Committee of the Parliamentary Intergroup on Digital Health and Digital Therapies, led to key recommendations for decision-makers at the political and institutional level. These covered three priority areas:

  • Artificial Intelligence and Real World Evidence (RWE): Enhancing real-world applications for AI in healthcare.
  • Digital Therapies (DTx): Proposing stronger regulatory frameworks and scientific validation processes for adoption.
  • Digital Health Competencies: Addressing skill gaps and fostering workforce readiness for digital innovation.

A significant highlight was the proposal to advance Law 1803, which aims to regulate and promote the adoption of DTx through defined scientific validation pathways. This initiative seeks to bridge the regulatory gap in Italy, aligning the country with other European nations that are advancing Digital Therapies more systematically.

Acknowledgments
